Higher Education Law Today with Mary Ann McGrail, J.D., Ph.D.

This workshop covers the basics of higher education law and recent important legal developments impacting institutions of higher education, such as the Supreme Court’s invalidation of affirmative action programs in college admissions.  Participants will get an overview of relevant federal and state law and an in-depth look at issues such as campus speech and the First Amendment, changing policy and regulations governing higher education, and cybersecurity and mandated privacy protections.  Using a case study, attendees will discuss and work through some of the significant challenges facing higher education leaders today.

- ABOUT THE FACILITATOR -

Mary Ann McGrail is an attorney in Washington, DC practicing in the fields of higher education law and international law.   She has worked  in the field of higher education for over forty years, as an academic and legal practitioner and  is author of the blog “Security Issues for Institutions of Higher Education.”    Admitted to practice in DC, MD and NY, and to the Supreme Court Bar, she is Co-Chair of the DC Bar International Law Community, on the Executive Committee of the Lieber Society of the American Society of International Law (ASIL), and Co-Chair of the Intellectual Property Group at ASIL as well as head of international humanitarian law programs of the American Red Cross for the National Capital region.  She holds a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in English literature.  She is admitted to practice in DC, MD, NY and to the Supreme Court of the United States.
