It’s fitting that Dr. Hornig’s birthday falls during Women’s History Month. Lilli S. Hornig, Ph.D., a prominent scientist recently featured in the film Oppenheimer, served as the first Executive Director of HERS in 1972, a time, Hornig noted, when “there were virtually no women among tenured faculty and top administrators at major universities; [and] women held barely one-fifth of all academic appointments” (Hornig, 1978. Grant Magazine).
After the war, Hornig became a fierce advocate for women in higher education and was instrumental in the founding of HERS. She was also the first director of the Committee on the Education and Employment of Women in Science and Engineering at the National Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Hornig’s legacy continues to transform the lives and careers of women and gender-diverse leaders in higher education today. Join us on HERS Giving Day, March 22nd, and help us achieve our goal of securing 103 gifts to celebrate Dr. Hornig’s 103rd birthday. All funds raised will directly support HERS’s work to prepare and empower our community of bold leaders.
